http://pvlastos.wordpress.com/ Paul G. Vlastos from the village of Vizari, Rethymnon, Creta (1835-1925), is considered today the father of Cretan Folklore. He has left us with an enormous and valuable collection of folklore material in 93 handwritten volumes, which he collected from one end of Crete to the other. This material remains in fact unedited in its totality until today. Paul G. Vlastos, being himself an expert on Byzantine music, has recorded precious items of ecclesiastical music together with popular songs and dances of Crete and the rest of Greece. The movie is following the school teacher and virtuose in the music instrument of Lyra Dimitris Sgouros in his research journey in the Paul G. Vlastos handwritten volumes that concern the traditional music of Crete. By having studied this material for three years, he finally chose 48 songs, which can be classified as the most old, genuine and representative from those contained in the files of Paul G. Vlastos and it is in fact significant not only for Crete, but also for the whole of Greece because it echoes the oldest saved folk melodies in Crete during the period from 1860 to 1910 written in the byzantine music system.
