Karaikudi S. Subramanian, born in 1944, represents the 9th generation of the illustrious Karaikudi Vina Tradition. The Karaikudi style of vina playing is very well known for its clarity of expression, precision in details and its strong conviction in the fundamentals of music making. As 7th generation vina players, Karaikudi Subbarama Iyer (elder) and Karaikudi Sambasiva Iyer (younger), known by their sobriquet ‘Karaikudi Veenai Brothers', established a concert performing style in the early part of the 20th century. Karaikudi Sambasiva Iyer was amongst the first recipients of the National Award conferred on by the first President of India, Sri Rajendra Prasad, in 1952 after India gained independence. Karaikudi S. Subramanian (KSS), grandson of the elder of the Karaikudi Brothers, was adopted by Karaikudi Sambasiva Iyer to continue the Karaikudi lineage. KSS's authentic and traditional style of vina playing is rare and highly regarded in the field of Karnatak music. He has been designated the title "Top-Grade artist" by All India Radio and has performed numerous radio concerts as well as live concerts at various venues around the world. He has also accompanied eminent artists such as flutist T. Viswanathan and vocalist K. V. Narayanaswamy. Greatest of mridangam maestros such as Professor Trichy Sankaran, Sri. T.K. Murthy, Sri. Umayalpuram Sivaraman and Sri. Palghat Raghu, have performed with him. Furthermore, he has engaged in cross cultural performances with prominent musicians of other genres such as the Irish fiddler Martin Hayes and the Finnish composer Eero Hämeenniemi. Dr KSS assumes a unique position as a performer and educator. He is an authentic representative of the ancient Karnatak tradition who bridges the traditional and modern educational approaches for effective communication of the music. The outcome of his research is the learning methodology COMET which seeks to meet the demands of any learner. The focus of COMET is a holistic learning of the aesthetics of Karnatak music. Dr KSS has visited universities and colleges worldwide. These include Amherst College, San Francisco State College, National University of Singapore, Leeds College of Music, York University, University of Michigan, University of Limerick and University College Cork. Dr KSS’s expertise as a musician-scholar with both a practical and theoretical understanding of South Indian music is unique. He belongs to the last generation of musicians with an authentic and first-hand experience of the indigenous approaches to Karnatak music performance, practice and education.
