Here's a little slice of channel surfing on cable TV (or more specifially, Warner Cable's QUBE) in and around Columbus, OH, with the main centerpiece being an edition of Donahue where Tony Gabriel (husband of Mrs. America 1979, Carrie Gabriel) was duking it out with members of Phil's studio audience. (Trivia: Columbus, OH, was home to WCMH Channel 4, which until 1976 was known as WLWC - and as such, formerly a sister station to then-WLWD Channel 2 in Dayton, now WDTN, where Donahue began his show back in 1967, and was there until 1974 when he moved to Chicago; the segment of his show shown here at one point featured one of the fonts from 1974-82 originating station WGN Channel 9's newer CG system.) To sort everything out, the point at which the channels are changed will be time stamped in parentheses. Includes: Clip from middle of episode of The Big Valley, S03E17, "Days of Wrath" (original air date January 8th 1968) Promo for TV Guide, December 1st-7th issue (with Barbara Walters on the cover) (voiceover by Taylor Grant) (music: "Solar Song 3" by Reynold Weidenaar, from the Sam Fox music library, used from 1968 until 1980) (both from WTVN Channel 6 in Columbus, OH) (0:29) Short clip from Green Acres (from SuperStation WTBS) (0:30) First look at Donahue - topic "Discrimination Against Women" (from WCMH) (0:35) Brief change to look at Premium Schedule Theatre IV, P-4 for Monday, November 26th 1979 (0:35) Commercial involving a girl wearing a sweater (0:36) News channel (C-4, "News Update") with report on statewide manhunt for a Guernsey County Jail prisoner, Donald Keeton, who'd escaped from Guernsey County Hospital where he'd been treated for injuries after a fight with another inmate - time is 9:40:03am (0:37) Excerpt from The 700 Club (featuring Ben Kinchlow at frame right) (likely aired on C-7, "Religious Programs" channel) (0:37) Back to news channel, same as before but from 9:40:04am to 9:40:09am (with weather report transmitted by telephone on the audio) (0:43) Back to The 700 Club (0:44) Children's program with woman apparently singing "Sing a Song of Sixpence" (likely from Pinwheel, C-3 - a direct predecessor to today's Nickelodeon channel) (0:45) Romper Room from WUAB Channel 43 in Cleveland, OH, followed by brief cut to exercise show (Debbie Drake?) (0:46) Promo for Emergency! with Kevin Tighe from WDHQ Channel 24 in Toledo (12 Galion, Crestline Cable) (0:47) Prices on radishes and Sun Maid raisins (probably from Channel C-2, "Consumer Information"?) (0:48) A shot of various home improvement companies and their locations (likely from T-3, Public Access) (0:48) Back to Green Acres again (0:49) Donahue again (0:50) Back to Premium Schedule The rest of the clip (from 0:51 onwards) is the Donahue installment in question, with the debate especially becoming heated This aired on local Columbus TV (via QUBE) on Tuesday, November 27th 1979 between 9:39am and 9:41 am (Eastern time). About The Museum of Classic Chicago Television: The MCCTv (FuzzyMemoriesTV) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit whose primary mission is the preservation and display of off-air, early home videotape recordings (70s to early 80s, mostly) recorded off of TV (in Chicago or other cities now too); things which would likely be lost if not sought out and preserved digitally. If you have any old 1970s videotapes recorded off of TV please email: tapes@fuzzy.tv Even though (mostly) short clips are displayed here, we preserve the entire broadcasts in our archives - the complete programs with breaks (or however much is present on the tape), for historical preservation. For information on how to help in our mission, to donate or lend tapes to be converted to digital, please e-mail tapes@fuzzy.tv Thank you for your help!
