In this video I explain how you can use mark-making and collage as a means to de-stress. In this technique I combine the two to make art for the sole purpose of relieving stress. I provide many examples, explain what supplies you will need, and then demonstrate followed by yet more examples. In order for the art to be stress relieving you must shift your focus away from art that has to look a certain way or even be beautiful. It may or may not be beautiful in the end, but what's more important is that it relieves your stress. In this technique you must be willing to be spontaneous, take risks, let go of perfectionism, and allow yourself to be loose and just play, break art rules, and just have fun. There is value in using your art to play and attend to your emotions. It can go a long way towards maintaining your mental health and stabilizing your emotions. Later this art can be used as a base for a journal page, or reworked into an art piece that you do like or that is more planned or balanced. You can cover certain areas that you don't like, add more collage, mark making, or paint, or other items, or use stencils or stamps over top of it, etc. There is an endless variety of ways you can later alter it. It can also be ripped up or cut up to add into a new art piece. Therefore look at it as a stepping stone and a good way to loosen yourself up so that you can be more focused and flow more free for the art piece that you do want to look a certain way. You may also gather ideas for color schemes, marks, or combinations for a future artwork! Don't worry! Just make art! And let is be as messy and weird as it wants to be!
