The Iconoclast: Shinzo Abe and the New Japan Tobias Harris, Senior Vice President, TENEO Organised by the AIIA National Office Shinzo Abe’s resignation last month marked the unexpected end to the longest and one of the most consequential premierships in modern Japanese history. Abe presided over a historic boom, a series of diplomatic triumphs, and a stretch of political stability that set Abe's Japan apart from that of many of his peers. Nevertheless, his successors will also inherit deep-seated challenges and threats to Japan’s security and prosperity. On the day that his Liberal Democratic Party chooses his successor, Tobias Harris, will discuss Abe’s life, legacy, and what comes next for Japan after Abe. Tobias Harris is a Senior Vice President of the advisory firm Teneo, covering Japan and East Asia. He is the author of The Iconoclast: Shinzō Abe and the New Japan, the first English-language biography of Japan’s longest-serving prime minister. Since working for a Japanese legislator in 2006-2007, he has run the blog Observing Japan, commented on Japanese politics for major publications and on television and radio programmes; and conducted graduate research at MIT and the University of Tokyo. From 2014-2020, he was a research fellow at the Sasakawa Peace Foundation USA, where he studied Japan’s political economy and analysed public opinion polls.
