Las Vegas Monorail 2006 FULL RIDE, BOTH SIDES - April 10, 2006

When the new automated Las Vegas Monorail debuted, that became a MUST DO on my next Vegas trip, which was spring break 2006. The MGM Grand-Bally’s Monorail closed in 2002, and I rode and recorded that system since they used the old Mark IV monorails from Disney World, the monorails of my childhood. The Vegas monorail was expanded and reopened on July 15, 2004 with 7 stations and 9 brand new Bombardier Innovia 200 MVI monorails. Unlike the Mark VI trains at Disney, these were automated, with no driver. The beams were the same as WDW with the trains straddling on top. The dual beam system raises up to 70 feet at the highest point and is 4 miles long. The monorails can transport tourists up to 50 mph, powered by 750 volts of DC electricity. When I rode the monorail during my 2006 vacation I bought a $15 unlimited day pass. The day pass is still $15, but now there’s a $13.45 mobile day pass if you use your phone. LAS VEGAS 2006: Las Vegas is an ever changing city, so here is an in-depth look into the sights along this 2006 monorail ride. As best as I can (using Google Maps) I will state what is still there, what is gone, and what has changed. Please stand clear of the doors. Sahara Station. We board the Star Trek: The Experience sponsored monorail southbound at the Sahara Station. The Monorail maintenance shed is in the distance and monorails are coming out for the day. The Sahara still stands today, but it was called the SLS from 2014-2019. Turnberry Place can be seen, and that still stands. Las Vegas Hilton Station. The Las Vegas Hilton became the Westgate Las Vegas in 2014. Star Trek: The Experience was an attraction at the Hilton which ran from 1998-2008. The monorail was advertising the new Borg Invasion 4D, which opened in 2004. In the distance is the Riviera, which closed in 2015 and was demolished in 2016. In the far distance is Circus Circus, which still stands. Next to that is the Stardust tower, which was imploded in March 2007. Also seen is the Somerset House Motel, which was demolished in 2011, and it looks like there is a convention center there now. Convention Center Station. This station is now called the Boingo Station at Las Vegas Convention Center. Across the street there was a pop-up casino called The Beach, which is nonexistent on Google Maps now. The Residence Inn still stands as well as the convention center. The Sprint sponsored monorail passes by. Still standing, Wynn Las Vegas is in the distance. We travel along the longest, and fastest stretch with the gorgeous Wynn Golf Course outside the window. On the other side is the Embassy Suites, which is still there. We pass by the gigantic Sands Expo Convention Center which became the Venetian Plaza Expo in 2021. On the other side is a parking lot, which is now Sphere, an entertainment arena that opened in 2023. The Monster Energy drink monorail passes by. Harrah’s/Imperial Palace Station. Harrah’s is still the same, but Imperial Palace became The Linq in 2014, and was The Quad from 2012-2014. On the other side is now the breath-taking High Roller Ferris wheel which opened in 2014. The patch of trees next to Imperial Palace is now the popular Linq Promenade, which opened in March 2014. The Hilton Grand Vacations hotel remains. Flamingo/Caesars Palace Station. Both still remain today. The Bellagio is seen in the distance and that still remains too. Once we cross Flamingo Road, the classic Michael Gaughan casino Barbary Coast can be seen. It changed to Bill’s Gambling Hall in 2007 and The Cromwell boutique hotel in 2014. On the other side, the Westin still stands. We pass a sign for “Bourbon Street Hotel & Casino”, but the hotel was demolished in 2005. Gliding around a tower from Bally’s, now the Horseshoe, we pass by the old Mark IV monorail maintenance shed, which is STILL THERE on Google maps! Paris/Bally’s Station. Paris is still the same, but Bally’s was renamed the Horseshoe in December 2022. The pool and tennis courts still remain. We pass by the Aladdin Resort parking garage, which was rebranded to Planet Hollywood in 2007. Next to that is an empty lot, which is now a Hilton Grand Vacations Elara tower. On the other side of Harmon Ave. is the Carriage House, which looks the same. MGM Grand Station. The MGM Grand is the same and the New York-New York Hotel & Casino remains as well. This station was one of the originals from 1995. The Star Trek monorail pulls away and switches to the northbound track. Hooters Hotel & Casino is in the distance, which changed to the OYO in 2019. We board the next northbound train, the Hundred Year Happy Hour monorail sponsored by VisitLasVegas.com. The interior was not themed like the Star Trek monorail was. On the other side of the beam the Signature at MGM Grand is being constructed. Switch beams. After trains stop at the Sahara Station a switch beam slides over, exiting the monorail on the southbound rail. A BankWest of Nevada monorail is coming out of the shed at the end of the video.
