Aurorasaurus Q&A About Aurora Impacts on Power Networks With Dr. Paul Moses

Dr. Paul Moses is a researcher at the University of Oklahoma School of Electrical and Computer Engineering. On November 14, 2023, he gave a presentation to the Aurorasaurus Ambassadors about aurora-related geomagnetically-induced currents (GICS) and their impacts on power networks. Aurorasaurus is an award-winning citizen science project that uses crowdsourced and citizen science data to create the first real-time, global aurora map. The project has made a number of discoveries, including that social media is effective for detecting large natural events; that crowdsourcing the verification of citizen science data works; and that space weather alerts are more accurate when integrated with citizen science data. The Aurorasaurus team in collaboration with citizen scientists and the scientific community published the first scientific study of STEVE (Strong Thermal Emission Velocity Enhancement), an aurora-like phenomenon that appears closer to the equator and flows from east to west.
