Classic car 1969 Daimler Sovereign 420 top of range good quality car last of the compact sporty Jaguar/Daimler cars with E type 4.2 engine and better handling.Produced as a sporty compact alternative to the huge MKX / 420 G (G for grand) the larger heavier MKX car handled poorly due to its huge size/weight and was not a commercial success. The 420 was only produced for a few years end of the 1960s,looks old fashioned, looking alot like its big brother 420G but based on the smaller MK2 / S type cars having similar interior, best was under the skin.It had many new improvements,a test bed for the future XJ6 of the 1970s.Straight six XK engine from the E type but with twin carb set up,245BHP,much more powerful than the old MK2/S type 3.8 cars, the 420 arrival killed off interest in the old cars quite quickly before being put out of production by the younger more modern XJ6.This car had many extras used in the XJ6 later,an uprated IRS suspension,E type Differential & axle,Variomatic power steering, dual circuit disc brakes all round and a superior cooling system to the old cars. This car shows less than 78,000 miles, same family owned it for 20 years and kept in storage most of this time so in excellent structural condition with no major rust. All original sills ,original floors with no welding, only jacking points have had past repair done.Wheel arches, door bottoms etc excellent, had a bare metal respray 18 months ago to a fair standard in tough 2K Signal red the original colour, not a concourse winner but quite respectable.Interior has original leather seats in reasonable condition, still soft showing some age cracks and reasonable wear, stitching excellent.Head lining has been replaced but not perfect and side pieces are original and need replacing. It starts runs and drives, not much work needed to make roadworthy, has had £1000s spent on it recently with many new and reconditioned parts, suspension, brakes, ignition, etc These cars look great, drive much better than their 1960s older brothers and handle better than the sporty E type, the closest you could get to a 4 door E type in the day. When the larger more modern XJ6 arrived it was a world class beater well into the 1980s thanks to it being based on the almost forgotten 420 test bed.
