This presentation was recorded at GOTO Copenhagen 2021. #GOTOcon #GOTOcph http://gotocph.com PJ Hagerty - Developer Advocate at Mattermost & A Board Member of Open Sourcing Mental Illness @pjhagerty3756 ORIGINAL TALK TITLE Urban Legends: What You Code Makes You Who You Are ABSTRACT He's traveled the world speaking about programming and the way people think and interact (and he wears nice hats while doing it). If you were a carpenter, would your skills at building be more important than the tools you use to build? Skills, right? Tools are just a means to an end. So why do developers think the language they use defines the problems they solve? This talk will take a look at misconceptions across the board, some experiences, both positive and negative, people have had crossing barriers to new languages, and show some of the benefits thinking of one's self as a coder and not a "Ruby coder" or an "Elixir dev" can have on being a better problem solver. The idea that we know everything there is to know about programming through one tool or language is a bit off. This talk will focus on the stereotypes associated with certain languages, the biases between Open Source and Enterprise, and the importance of continuing to learn the craft of coding [...] TIMECODES 00:00 Intro 01:56 What the talk is about 02:47 What the talk won't be about 03:00 Ruby 07:57 PHP 09:19 Microservices 13:34 Java 14:44 Python 18:06 Linux 19:04 Pearl 20:45 Jamstack 22:16 Anything with a JS 23:10 And so many more... 24:38 Evolution is important 25:16 Communities 26:04 Messed up things people say... 29:36 Cross pollination 30:27 The tech community 30:57 Open source & enterprise 33:59 So what else? 37:49 Conclusion/Outro Download slides and read the full abstract here: https://gotocph.com/2021/sessions/1954 RECOMMENDED BOOKS Dave Thomas & Andy Hunt • The Pragmatic Programmer • https://amzn.to/3azvUy3 David Farley • Modern Software Engineering • https://amzn.to/3GI468M Eric Evans • Domain-Driven Design • https://amzn.to/3tnGhwm Rinaldi & Camden • The Jamstack Book • https://bit.ly/3gtSYCg Kent Beck • Extreme Programming Explained • https://amzn.to/34OVMH6 Fred Brooks Jr. • The Mythical Man-Month • https://amzn.to/31NJc5C Forsgren, Humble & Kim • Accelerate: The Science of Lean Software and DevOps • https://amzn.to/3tCz1xO Eric Ries • The Lean Startup • https://amzn.to/396fOva / gotocon / goto- / goto_con / gotoconferences #ProgrammingLanguages #ProgrammingLanguage #Programming #LanguageStereotypes #ProgrammingLanguageStereotypes #Mattermost #PJHagerty #Ruby #RubyOnRails #PHP #Microservices #Java #Python #Linux #Pearl #Jamstack #Swift #ObjectiveC #JS #JavaScript CHANNEL MEMBERSHIP BONUS Join this channel to get early access to videos & other perks: / @goto- Looking for a unique learning experience?
