Hey friends, this track is called “Yarrow.” It’s inspired by “The Dowie Dens o’ Yarrow,” one of Scotland’s border ballads that Sir Walter Scott published in Minstrelsy of the Scottish Border in 1803. In many versions, a lover is ambushed in the narrow wooded valleys of Yarrow after being rejected by powerful suitors and betrayed by those closest to him. In contrast to that tale of fatal betrayal and grief, my version turns inward. The original imagines dramatic conflict and loss. My reimagined lyrics explore holding time, memory, and love close in the quiet moments—when everything feels fragile but still full of hope. Instead of speaking of swords and ambush, I talk about moments kept in jars, hours pressed as precious things, and choosing to stay by someone’s side through the small days. This is a version less about tragedy and more about perseverance, vulnerability, and the strength we carry into silence. If you feel drawn, I hope you listen to older renditions of The Dowie Dens o’ Yarrow next and hear how this story has echoed through time.
