Explore the haunting remains of Hallsands – the Devon village lost to the sea. Once home to a thriving fishing community, Hallsands stood proudly on the cliffs of Start Bay until a devastating combination of human interference and natural forces led to its collapse in 1917. In the late 19th century, dredging began just offshore to provide shingle for the construction of Devonport Dockyard. This removed the natural sea defenses protecting the village. Despite local warnings, the dredging continued, weakening the coastline. Then, on a stormy night in January 1917, the sea reclaimed Hallsands, leaving homes in ruins and families displaced. This video captures what remains of the village today – a powerful reminder of the consequences of disrupting nature. Shot from the air, you’ll get a bird’s-eye view of the ruins, clifftop paths, and the beautiful but unforgiving coastline. 📍 Hallsands, South Devon 🎥 Drone footage by Cymru Aerial 📚 A story of resilience, loss, and the power of the sea.
