The Big Basket, one of the most famous examples of mimetic or novelty architecture, was opened in 1997 as a scaled-up version of Longaberger’s signature basket. It was designed to replicate the company's best selling product, the Medium Market Basket, but 160 times larger. The 180,000 sq. ft. building sitting on a 25 acre campus building cost $30M to build. It is 7-storeys tall topped by two steel handles, each weighing 75 tons, which are fitted with heating elements to prevent them from freezing and so protecting the glass atrium below from falling ice. Once the headquarters of the now-defunct Longaberger Company, the Big Basket has been closed since 2016. Here is why: At its peak in 2000, Dave Longaberger’s company employed more than 8,200 people and the Big Basket would hold up to 500 people. Through a series of mistakes and decisions along with a combination of a recession and changing tastes in home decor reduced sales, the company saw a period of falling profits and staff reductions. In June 2018, the company filed for bankruptcy with no plans to return. One of the common problems with mimetic architecture is its resale value. Big Basket had been sold to local developer Steve Coon for $1.2M, considerably less than the asking price of $7.5M. There were ideas for future uses including; converting it into a hotel, a multi-family residence, senior housing or an academic building but the arrival of COVID-19 destroyed those plans. Today,, the most likely fate of the Big Basket will be a mixed-use development, maybe with condos or retail in the near future.
