Here there will be enlargement of the chest for various reasons, if we look into the causes, the most common cause is not known. So we call it as idiopathic, means to say that even inspite of investigation, everything comes out to be normal, even without any particular reason, so they will get such condition called as gynecomastia, that means enlargement of the male chest, that amounts upto 75% to 80% of the cases. But in rest of the situations, in few cases, there would be known causes like hormonal imbalance, means that the female hormones are more and the male hormone is less. In few cases like testicular cancer, liver failure and alcoholic, liver cirrhosis. In such various conditions and the usage of various drugs for long time. Even such drugs will cause gynecomastia. It is physiological, means to say that means it is normal. So immediately after birth they will have the breast nodule and adolescent there will be enlargement. But usually it will go on its own, but it stays for a short period for less than a year, but if it that is more than a year then it is worrisome, means pathological or it needs attention or it needs surgery. So once again the common cause contrary to the belief, the common cause is not known. So instead of doing lot of investigations or hormonal assay, if they visit the cosmetic surgeon, then they will examine and then they will decide whether the cause is idiopathic or the cause is due to some known cause and that depends on looking at the secondary sexual characters and other examinations. So thereby we can avoid some investigations. So the cosmetic surgeon is the better person to decide what could be the possible cause for them.
