Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act was enacted in the year 1999 with the main purpose to regulate and control the increase in organised crime and terrorism. It deals with the prevention and control of criminal activity by organised syndicates or gangs in India. Offences under the act can be investigated by an officer who is not below the rank of DSP. No special court can take cognizance of offence without the prior approval of a police officer, not below the rank of additional director general of police.
