Emetophobia, also known as the fear of vomiting, is an anxiety disorder that can significantly impact daily life. People with emetophobia may avoid restaurants, travel, social events, pregnancy, or relationships because of the intense fear of getting sick or vomiting. In this video, therapist Jenn Lowe explains the signs of emetophobia, common safety behaviors, and evidence-based treatment options like Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) therapy. Many people with emetophobia experience panic attacks, intrusive thoughts about vomiting, and physical symptoms of anxiety. To try to feel safe, they may engage in behaviors such as excessive handwashing, overcooking food, checking expiration dates, carrying anti-nausea medication, or avoiding situations where vomiting might occur. While these safety behaviors can temporarily reduce anxiety, they often keep the fear cycle going. The good news is that emetophobia is treatable. One of the most effective treatments is Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP), a specialized form of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT). ERP helps individuals gradually face feared situations while learning how to tolerate uncertainty and reduce avoidance behaviors. Treatment is collaborative, supportive, and done at a pace that feels manageable. A common misconception is that treatment requires intentionally vomiting. In reality, the goal of therapy is not to make someone throw up, but to help them build confidence in their ability to handle anxiety and uncertainty without letting fear control their life. If you or someone you love struggles with emetophobia, recovery is possible with the right support and treatment. Jenn Lowe, M.A., LCMHC, LPC, RPT-S provides therapy for anxiety disorders and phobias, including emetophobia, with in-person services in Jackson, Michigan and telehealth for clients in North Carolina. https://www.jennlowe.care/
