This part of Texas is known as the Permian Basin. The Permian Basin is known for high school football and oil fields. Big Spring, Texas has a population of about 28,000 people. It is located in between Abilene, Texas and Midland, Texas. Big Spring is the county seat of Howard County, Texas. Big Spring was officially established in 1882. The presence of fresh drinking water was a valuable resource that brought people to the area for a long time prior to the community being officially established. Odessa, Texas is the county seat of Ector County and has a population of roughly 120,000 people. Odessa, Texas is named after Odessa, Ukraine. Odessa is heavily influenced by the oil and gas industry and is situated in the Permian Basin.
