If you have been treated for Breast Cancer, you may have had a Sentinel Node Biopsy. This is the removal of the first Lymph Node the Breast drains lymphatic fluid to. If this node has cancer in it, your Surgeon will typically go on to either remove all further suspicious nodes (called an Axillary Lymph Node Clearance or Dissection), or you may have your armpit (axilla) Radiated. When it comes to Lymphoedema Risk, many patients are told their risk after Sentinel Node Biopsy is very low. Research statistics suggest lymphoedema risk following Sentinel Node Biopsy is low, however, from my clinical experience I still find patients who have had a Sentinel Node Biopsy can present with Lymphoedema. As it says - the risk is low, but it is still there! Unfortunately what I am finding is that sometimes Medical Teams are not advocating early referral to a Lymphoedema Physiotherapist because they are assuming the patient is probably not going to get lymphoedema. Watch this video to find out what you should do towards Lymphoedema Prevention if you are going to have a Sentinel Node Biopsy.
