The Fire Triangle shows how fires start and are sustained. Fire is a chemical reaction involving three elements. For a fire to exist, all three elements must be present. The three elements are. Oxygen - Oxygen is a gas that makes up around 20% of air. Oxygen can also be found in oxidising substances. Heat - Heat is the energy necessary to increase the temperature of a fuel to the point where ignition occurs. The source of heat does not have to be enormous for a fire to start. It could be a smouldering cigarette, a spark or even a frayed cable. Fuel - Anything that burns is fuel for a fire. Common 'fuels' found in workplaces include packaging materials, textiles and waste. If one or more element of the fire triangle is removed, then a fire cannot start or be sustained. Think about how you could remove an element of the fire triangle. For example, properly disposing of cigarette butts removes ignition heat. Removing rubbish removes fuel. Closing fire doors removes oxygen. Part of the online Echo3 Fire Awareness course for staff.
