Dan, Doug, Kelsi, Cami, and I took a two day'ish backpack trip to summit Mt. Whitney (my 4th and Cami's 1st ascent!) You'd think it would get old but its charm has not worn off. We camped at Whitney Portal Campground to acclimate then headed out the next day to Outpost Camp and arrived around 11:30a. We snagged prime real estate next to the stream and set up camp. Some of us chilled while 2 younguns visited the camp waterfall. The next morning we left at 3:30a and made our way past Trailside Meadow, Trail Camp, and then ascended the switchbacks. A fire in Sequoia made for a stunning sunrise but wasn't bad enough that it impacted the hike. The weather cooperated with some clouds and cool weather. We reached the peak at 10:30a and enjoyed the views and the local marmot. After some snacks, pics, and video we headed back down. On the way back and close to camp, a helicopter was circling Outpost and eventually landed in the meadow. As we reached Outpost, a gentleman was on the ground seemingly relaxing. Several minutes later the pilot came out of the meadow and assisted the man who was laying down. Apparently he was anemic and his vitals were low. The officer and a volunteer assisted the gentleman to the copter and then took off for the hospital (we later found out he was recovering and doing well.) The mileage was spot on - 22 miles from trailhead to Peak and back. A worthy adventure capped off by pizza and beer in Lone Pine!
