In the shelter, the power failed so often that lullabies were mostly memory. She would press her ear to the wall and hear the city breathing through conduits—steam, distant rails, someone’s laughter traveling through iron like a secret. When storms came, the roof turned rainfall into percussion. She practiced matching pitch to thunder. By eight, she could hum a note so steady the leaking fluorescent above her bunk stopped flickering, as if embarrassment were an electrical property. Her first microphone was a broken comm handset salvaged from a relief truck. She rewired the capsule with copper thief-lines and wrapped the handle in gauze. The sound was awful—woolen, wounded—but when she sang, the kids on cots stopped crying. The handset hated lies. It cut pretty from the signal and kept only truth. She kept it. Years later, when a government recruiter asked what her “primary instrument” was, she said, “A broken speaker that tells you who you are.” They hired her on the spot.
