Katō Tomohiro, 25, drove a rented truck into a crowd and then indiscriminately stabbed pedestrians with a dagger, killing 7 people and injuring 10 within minutes before being apprehended. The investigation revealed the attack was premeditated. Katō, feeling isolated, resentful towards society, and recently fired from his job, had posted online messages foreshadowing the attack, rented the truck, and purchased knives days prior. He chose Akihabara, a symbol of a life he felt excluded from, specifically for its weekend crowds to maximize casualties and gain notoriety. Despite evidence of depression and social pressures, psychiatric evaluations found Katō legally sane and fully responsible for his actions. He confessed during the investigation. At his trial concluding in March 2011, he was convicted of mass murder and sentenced to death. After his appeals failed, Katō Tomohiro was executed on July 26, 2022. The incident prompted national reflection on social isolation, mental health issues, and led to stricter knife control laws in Japan.
