Click here for a video introducing the moat of Odawara Castle ➤ • 本当に小田原城は「戦国最強の城?」豊臣20万の包囲に耐えた総構の跡を訪ねる Koga City, which spreads out in the south of Shiga Prefecture. It has an image of being deep in the mountains where ninjas might live, but surprisingly, major roads such as National Route 1 and Shin-Meishin Expressway run through it. It used to be a very lively post town on the Tokaido. The famous castle in Koga is Mizuguchi Castle. The moat and stone walls visible in the city. The white turret is cool. This Mizuguchi Castle was built as the residence of the Tokugawa Shogun in the Edo period (1634, the 11th year of the Kanei era). It is more of a palace than a castle. This place, which is now the grounds, is the center, and it is said that a palace with the same building composition as Kyoto's Nijo Castle was built there. This is Tokugawa's Mizuguchi Castle. There was another castle in Mizuguchi. That is Mizuguchi Okayama Castle. It is about 1 km east of Tokugawa's Mizuguchi Castle, on a mountain called Furushiroyama, and was built by Toyotomi Hideyoshi towards the end of the Sengoku period. It is now a park with a great view, but upon further investigation, I found out that it was a rather impressive castle. It was apparently very luxuriously constructed, as well as being well fortified. It seems that successive lords of the castle were Toyotomi's senior vassals. What is strange is that almost no trace of this Toyotomi castle remains today. Not only the buildings, but even the stone walls have disappeared. What on earth could this mean? I will visit the now-vanished Toyotomi castle, Mizuguchi Okayama Castle, and ponder on this matter.
