While a summer storm was brewing in the distance, we sheltered under the barn at Panther Creek Farm, right outside Durham, North Carolina, to play a few songs from “Days Like These” and have a lot of fun. We kicked it off with Where I Come From, an ode to the smell of Saturday mornings at my grandmama’s house; to dirt roads and folks with hearts of gold. Lap steel meets fatback; fish grease bubbles and bass thumps; I hope the song tastes as good as it sounds. Then we slowed things down with “Nine-Eight.” It builds from my life’s lowest lows to its loftiest rafters. In an ocean of anxiety and confusion, his song is my prayer. “Sunflower Seeds” is about that kiss of a breeze you feel on a hot day; about snacks from the corner store; about long car rides nowhere. It’s a summer romance to the twang of the guitar. As we raced against the clouds, we kicked the New Orleans shuffle that is “Text Me Back (Stunt Like Curtis)” into overdrive. If you’ve ever had a situation that started in your DMs go from wonderful to weird, you’ll relate. And the trumpet solo brings the story to another level of far-out. Five minutes after we wrapped, the bottom dropped out. We were soaking wet twice; first from sweat, then from rain. But it was worth it, and we hope you enjoy.
