Here is Compaq Presario Windows 98 running on 86Box. This system was restored from the following recovery disk: Compaq QuickRestore for Presario 1700 (courtesy and special thanks to VoyArchivist for preserving this interesting piece of software and modifying it) https://archive.org/details/CompaqQui... 86Box is configured as a Compaq Presario 4500 with a Intel Pentium Processor running at 200MHz, 64MB's of RAM, Creative Labs SoundBlaster 16, AMD PCnet-FAST III NIC (SLiRP), and a S3 Trio64V+ SVGA Video Adapter. Windows is running at 800 by 600, 32-bit color depth. The Compaq OEM version of Windows 98 is installed. So I went through Hell and back getting this installed. In fact, I don't even know how I got this running considering I was doing random dark magic (removing ACPI "features") with the Device Manager. For a very brief description. After I did the first part of the install on 86Box (MSVPC2007 motherboard) restoring the Presario 1700 recovery image, I then reconfigured the machine to the Presario 4500, where the machine froze at the Shell.exe message that it couldn't proceed. I've entered into Safe Mode with F8, and then removed the APCI BIOS from Device manager, which took out everything except the non-PCI devices, so practically everything. The system was reconfigured as an ISA system first before PCI was enabled. I still got the same Shell message statement, so did a few more restarts and did some reconfiguration with the Presario 4500 BIOS (Press F10 to enter BTW). That was after some random things that I didn't keep track of, the system started to magically work all of a sudden. What I did, I don't know. While I did use the modified Presario 1700 installation media, what I did to get this working is still a complete mystery. The Shell error message is a product of a conflict caused by the ACPI feature of the Presario 4500, along with the PCI bus and Windows 98. The 86Box configuration uses mostly ISA devices for the sound (AWE64) and NIC (ISA AMD PCnet ISA+). The video is provided via a PCI Cirrus Logic GD5434. Just due to the shear insanity, I'm not going to describe what I did. However, I've uploaded the VM here so you can download it and give it a try, and use it as reference if you want to pursue the project yourself. I don't want people to go through the same Hell that I just went through. The setup is a largely virgin Compaq install configured with the main features, NIC (SLiRP), sound, and video enabled. The only change is that I've changed the main IE Home page to www.frogfind.com. https://archive.org/details/86-box-wi... 86Box Related https://86box.net/ https://ci.86box.net/job/86Box/ https://github.com/86Box/roms
