Capturing Daniel Postma of Archaeo Build explaining "how to use a Dutch turf-cutting shovel" to create the many turf blocks we used in the construction of the Turf Hut at Comrie Croft, Scotland (full video of the project on Historic Environment Scotland's channel!) The project: During the Grassroot Hutting Project in 2022-2023, traditional building skills workshops were held at Comrie Croft (Perthshire, Scotland) to build a modern turf "hut" (building following the hutting regulations in Scotland) only using hyper local materials extracted from the site and basing the floor plan on a local iron age roundhouse, downsized to 2/3rds of the ancient floorplan excavated. Biodiversity analysis before and after turf cutting by Edinburgh Uni revealed that removing the turf layer improved plants diversity, and as grasslands store carbon very efficiently and rapidly the turf used in the building is an efficient carbon sequestration system.
