2. Takht Sri Patna Sahib, Patna Takht Sri Patna Sahib, also known as Harmandir Sahib Patna, is one of the most sacred places of worship for Sikhs and holds immense religious, historical, and cultural importance. Located in Patna City, Bihar, this holy shrine is one of the five Takhts (thrones of authority) in Sikhism. It marks the birthplace of Guru Gobind Singh Ji, the tenth Sikh Guru, born here in 1666. The shrine was commissioned by Maharaja Ranjit Singh in the early 19th century to commemorate the reverence associated with the site. The present structure, however, is a more recent reconstruction completed in the early 2000s after a devastating fire in 1934 had caused serious damage. The new building showcases grandeur and serenity, blending modern elements with traditional Sikh architectural patterns. The complex features a white marble structure with golden domes on top, similar to other major Sikh shrines like the Golden Temple in Amritsar. The main prayer hall is beautifully ornamented with intricately carved marble, decorative arches, and gold work. The sanctum houses sacred relics of Guru Gobind Singh, such as weapons, manuscripts, personal belongings, and historical documents. These relics provide visitors with a sense of spiritual connection to the Guru’s life and teachings. The shrine is not only a spiritual destination but also a symbol of peace and unity. It attracts millions of devotees every year. Inside, kirtan (religious hymns) is sung continuously, creating a divine and peaceful atmosphere. The Guru ka Langar (community kitchen) serves free meals to thousands daily, reflecting the Sikh principles of equality and community service. The history of Takht Sri Patna Sahib also includes its connection with Guru Nanak Dev Ji and Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji, who visited the site during their lifetimes. This makes the place even more sacred for Sikhs. The shrine also played a crucial role during the Sikh reform movements and continues to guide Sikh religious institutions. The surrounding area, known as Patna Sahib or Harmandir Gali, is filled with smaller gurudwaras associated with events from Guru Gobind Singh’s childhood. These include Gurdwara Bal Leela and Gurdwara Kangan Ghat, all contributing to the spiritual ambiance of the locality. The administration of the shrine is handled by the Takht Sri Harmandir Ji Patna Sahib Management Committee. Over the years, they have improved facilities for pilgrims, including accommodation, libraries, and a museum that displays Sikh artifacts. Takht Sri Patna Sahib stands as a beacon of faith, discipline, and service. It is not only a place of worship but also a historical monument that preserves the legacy of Sikh heritage. Its peaceful environment and spiritual significance make it one of the most cherished pilgrimage sites in India.
