In this video, I describe, from the ground up, the principles and exercises that form rhythm and lead guitar and bass guitar playing as well. It’s all about drawing relaxed semicircles with fingers on both hands, and the hands themselves in order to not only firm up alignment between the hands, but also to align with a rhythm, so that solid time-keeping can be obtained. This then leads onto faster playing. On guitar, I describe rhythm playing and strumming, and then fingerpicking, and also playing lead guitar with plectrum, a combination of plectrum and fingers, and fingers only. Also on bass guitar (that starts at 14:52), I demonstrate right hand technique using alternate middle and index fingers, and the ultimate need for rhythmic control, even at a very slow tempo, which is where obvious rhythmic unevenness usually happens. Take things in a relaxed way, starting at a medium tempo, and then gradually slowing down. Sounds bizarre I know, but very very slow playing is the ultimate aim when preparing for speed.
