If there is anything like a sweet tooth for music, I think mine is satisfied most fully by late 17th/early 18th century German suites. Just as there are some candies that aren't worth the calories, there are suites that discourage further engagement. This is the way of all things. On the other hand, the good ones stay interesting. This is one such. This concluding sarabande appears in the same suite as the previously posted allemande ( • Allemande in F-major by Johann Pachelbel p... ) and courante ( • Courante in F-major by Johann Pachelbel pl... ). Pachelbel is easily able to maintain interest through these sixteen harmonically unremarkable measures with plenty of cheerful melodic invention. Please note, the similarity to "Country Gardens" toward the end (a simple inversion of the idea in the opening measures) is probably nobody's fault but it's pretty obvious that Grainger is the one who came late to the party. This instrument, a Hubbard French Double kit, was one of two that had returned to the shop for musical finishing within a few months. Both had been assembled well and each possessed a fine voice that hewed quite close to type – perfect for demonstrating the virtues of the design in recordings. They were a pair that kept me playing longer than my work schedule should have allowed. This recording was made in the Hubbard Shop in Saxonville in September, 2004. The instrument is tuned in a 1/5th-comma temperament ordinaire. The piece is played on the upper 8'.
