World War II History: Operation Torch

On November 8, 1942, American and British forces began Operation Torch, the Allied invasion of North Africa. Their mission: to open a new front, relieve pressure on the Soviet Union, and help drive Axis forces from the continent. Three Allied naval task forces — more than 100,000 troops — crossed hostile waters to land on the shores of Morocco and Algeria. They faced stiff but brief Vichy French resistance before securing Casablanca, Oran, and Algiers. Soon after, French units joined the Allies’ fight. Separated by ocean, but not by cause, the Allies proved that freedom’s defense knows no borders. The success of Operation Torch marked the beginning of the long road toward the liberation of Europe and the end of the war more than two years later. The North Africa American Cemetery honors those Americans who fought and sacrificed during this pivotal battle.
