(30 Jun 2014) President Barack Obama says the United States will support the construction of a solar power plant in Chile. Obama was meeting in the Oval Office on Monday with Chilean President Michelle Bachelet. He told reporters as the meeting got under way that they will be announcing collaboration on clean energy, including a major solar facility to help meet Chile's energy needs. Bachelet was elected president in March. She previously served from 2006 to 2010 and was Chile's first woman to be elected head of state. Obama joked that she is his "second favorite Michelle," presumably after the first lady. "We are looking forward to enhance our cooperation in many different areas," said Bachelet. "Chile and the US have had a very strong and mature relationship for so many years and we want to make it deeper and to enhance them in different areas." Obama says they also were discussing regional security and other issues before the United Nations Security Council. Chile is one of the non-permanent members of the council this year.
