A Brief Overview of New Criticism The mid-20th century saw the rise of New Criticism, a prominent literary theory that emphasized the text as a separate entity. This method emphasizes attentive reading and examination of the text's structure, language, and meaning rather than taking into account extraneous elements like the reader's experience, the author's goal, and the historical setting. Noteworthy Amounts Notable individuals linked to New Criticism comprise John Crowe Ransom, the man who first used the term, as well as significant critics such as Cleanth Brooks, I.A Richards, T.S. Eliot, and W.K. Wimsatt. The significance of the text, according to these academics, is not found in external interpretations but rather in its complex structure and the interaction of its literary components. Several fundamental ideas were introduced by New Criticism: 1.Intentional Fallacy: Disagrees with reading a text in light of the the author's intended meaning, stressing that the meaning of the text should be understood independently. 2. Affective Fallacy: Discourages assessing a text according to how it makes the reader feel; instead, it promotes objective analysis. 3.Close Reading: An in-depth analysis of the language, structure, and literary devices of the book to reveal its underlying meanings and connections. In next lecture we will discuss Formalism, a literary philosophy that is strongly associated with New Criticism, in my upcoming video. We will look at how, while emphasizing the significance of the text's shape and structure, Formalism takes a distinct approach to these components. Watch this space for a comprehensive examination of Formalism's contributions to literary theory. ★ CHAT RULES: -Urdu & English only chat -Don’t spam words/emoji -Keep curses to a MINIMUM -NO Racism, Harassment & Bullying -No advertising/self -promo ★YOUTUBE CHANNEL https://bit.ly/3znTwFr For More information, reach out here: ★Instagram bit.ly/3RRqMv9 ★Facebook bit.ly/3Lrwv7D
