Assagao, the "Village of Flowers" is rapidly turning into a concrete village because of rampant and senseless construction by builders blatantly greenwashing their clientele with claims that they're "Keeping in mind the elements of nature and impact on the environment"... Cutting down forest tree species and planting ornamentals won't strike any sort of balance. In this case, the Assagao village panchayat had issued a stop work notice to Ryago Hotels Pvt Ltd, a company affiliated to @vianaargoa in view of an alleged illegal road they were constructing on a hill. This is not the first time the real estate group has been called out for their utter disregard for the environment. Around the same time last year, locals and activists had protested against the illegal cutting of a heritage banyan tree opp St. Cajetan church in Assagao. The tiny and "once-up-on-a-time quaint village" is crumbling under the pressure of concrete monstrosities, private pools and other commercial establishments that have sprouted to cash in on the pandemic-fuelled influx in Goa so much so that dinner table conversations sometimes refer to Assagao as Assa-gur-gaon. To be fair, it's not just the rapacious builders but also the shortsighted land owners and corrupt officials from different stratas of the government who are to be held accountable for this irreversible damage that has transformed a village. What's concerning is that even after living through a pandemic and living through an impending climate emergency, these greedy ventures are plundering an ecosystem and poisoning the environment by not paying heed to the current and future generations. #greedversusneed #saveassagao #environmentalcrisis #villagelife #concretejungle #nowornever #hillcutting #treecutting #climateemergency #goastories
