(7 Sep 2018) Gjemshit Kadriu sees no reason for his town to become part of Kosovo, rather than southern Serbia as it is now. Others do. Kadriu's hometown of Presevo lies in an ethnic Albanian-dominated region that borders Kosovo. Presevo has been widely viewed as a potential bargaining chip in any land-swap deal between Serbia and its breakaway former province. Kadriu thinks the town should remain as it is. "There is no division, no division," said the ethnic Albanian. The prospect that Serbia and Kosovo could exchange territories in order to reach a lasting solution for their decades-long dispute has been pushed in recent weeks by both politicians and the media. However, if the two former war foes want to advance membership in the European Union - they will need to settle their differences. Germany and some of its European Union partners have voiced fears that a possible land-swap between Serbia and Kosovo could open up old wounds in the Balkans rather than resolve their long-standing differences. There are concerns that changes in the borders between Serbia and Kosovo could trigger the same demands in Bosnia, Macedonia and Montenegro, similar to the ones that triggered the bloody break-up of the former Yugoslavia in the 1990s. US President Donald Trump's administration has signalled it would accept any agreement between the two sides. Although there have been no fixed proposals on the table, most commonly mentioned ideas always involve the so-called Presevo Valley swap for Kosovo's Serb-populated north. The presidents of Serbia and Kosovo will meet Friday for a new round of EU-mediated talks in Brussels.
