Relational power dynamics shape many of the conflicts we experience in relationships. In this session, we explore how control, autonomy, and ego influence communication — and how self-awareness can help us move from power struggles to cooperation. Why do relationships turn into power struggles? In this first session of the Conflict Resolution Series, we explore relational power dynamics and how the human need for autonomy, control, and influence shapes conflict in relationships. Many arguments are not really about the surface issue — they are about respect, agency, and feeling heard. In this talk we discuss: • Power struggles in relationships • The psychology of control and autonomy • Mutual coercion and destructive conflict patterns • Ego, pride, and emotional regulation • Developing a cooperative mindset instead of trying to “win” arguments • Self-awareness as the foundation for healthier communication This session is part of a larger series focused on improving ourselves so we can be better for others. These ideas are also explored in my book: Don’t Be a Cactus: How to Make Connections and Resolve Conflicts Healthy relationships are not built by avoiding conflict, but by learning how to handle it with awareness and respect. If you want to improve your communication skills, emotional intelligence, and relationship health, this series is for you.
