Dogs 101 - SKYE TERRIER - Top Dog Facts About the SKYE TERRIER

Dogs 101 - SKYE TERRIER - Top Dog Facts About the SKYE TERRIER Check out More at BrooklynsCorner.com The Skye Terrier is a breed of terrier dogs named after the Island of Skye, off the northwest coast of Scotland. This tough dog was bred to hunt fox and otter, and retains that grit even now. While most other Scottish terrier breeds were developed in the 19th and 20th centuries, dogs similar to the Skye Terrier were being used in hunting as early as the 1500s. But the exact breed history is a little unclear because several dog varieties from the region were clubbed together as Skye Terriers for some time. Some believe that this long-haired strain of terriers was produced when dog survivors of the Spanish Armada bred with local terriers in the late 1500s. Dogs brought to the region by Vikings could also have produced the Skye Terrier over several generations. The modern Skye Terrier really came to prominence in 1840, when, under Queen Victoria’s patronage, both types of the Skye Terrier – the drop-eared and the prick-eared – became popular with the upper class as well as the commoners. The dog was brought to the US soon after. Time for some Ruff Trivia: What is the approximate length-to-height ratio of the adult Skye Terrier? o A: 2:1 o B: 1.5:1 o C: 1:1 What do you think, give it your best guess in the comments below before we get to the answer! Hang on tight and we’ll get back to this Ruff Trivia Question toward the end of the video. The average height of an adult male Skye Terrier is 10 inches and that of the female is 9.5 inches. The weight of the male tends to be between 35 and 40 pounds, and that of the female between 25 and 30 pounds. It has a short, soft undercoat and a hard, straight topcoat. The profuse coat, which falls straight down either side of the body over oval-shaped ribs, protects it from the sharp teeth of the animals it was bred to hunt. The hair on the head veils the forehead and eyes, and forms a short beard and apron. The feathering on ears falls straight down, surrounding the ears like a fringe. The common colors are fawn, blue, grey, blonde and black. Grooming: Daily brushing is recommended for the Skye Terrier. Trimming of hair is common to keep it from dragging on the ground. Trimming of nails, brushing of teeth and checking of ears for wax buildup have to be regular. The area around the eyes and mouth also requires regular cleaning. Environment: The Skye Terrier is a tough and fearless dog that can be mild-mannered inside the house, and is affectionate with its family and good with children. Many dogs of the breed are known to grow attached to one member of the family. It gets along well with family pets. It is also suspicious of strangers, and makes for a good watchdog. Training: A Skye Terrier can be sensitive to harsh correction, and a firm but patient hand is advised for its training. The breed is generally reserved by nature and early socialization is recommended. Its exercise needs can be met with a short walk or a mild game. Any sort of vigorous exercise, especially in its growth years, can cause bone-related issues. Health: The life expectancy of a Skye Terrier is 12 to 14 years. Mammary cancer is a leading cause of death in the breed. Other concerns can be a malignant blood vessel tumor, autoimmune disease, hyperthyroidism, and bone-related problems. The Skye Terrier is a great mix of elegance and pluck. It may not be one of the most exuberant dogs around, but it can be a fiercely loyal companion once you win its friendship. Find out if the Skye Terrier would be a good addition to your home. Now you can visit Brooklyn’s Corner.com to take our quiz and find out which dog would be the best match for you.
