_____ About the game _______________________ Out Run is an absolute icon of the 80s, but when you strip away the nostalgia, what are we actually left with? Today, I’m breaking down why this classic feels a bit 'bare-bones' by modern standards. Let’s start with the positives. The game is very playable; the controls are responsive, and it’s easy to pick up and go. One of its saving graces is the branching paths. Having multiple endings gives you a reason to come back at least a few times to see all the different sceneries the game has to offer. It’s important to manage your expectations: this isn't a race in the traditional sense. You aren't competing against other drivers for a podium spot. You are simply playing to reach the finish line before the timer runs out or to maximize your score. If you’re looking for the thrill of a competitive race, you won't find it here. The game’s biggest issue is that it’s too simple. There are no difficulty levels, and once you get the hang of it, it feels quite easy. Because the core loop is so basic, it starts to feel like the same thing over and over again after just a few minutes. Then, we have the physics—or lack thereof. The biggest frustration comes from the AI traffic. Other cars constantly block your path, and to make matters worse, the AI cars don't respect the laws of physics. They move in ways that make no sense just to get in your way, while you are stuck with very limited maneuverability. Out Run is a legendary aesthetic, but as a game, it’s a bit of a mixed bag. It's a very simple experience that suffers from repetitive gameplay and 'cheating' AI traffic. It's worth a quick session for the music and the endings, but don't expect a deep driving simulator.
