Gerda Wegener (1886 - 1940) was born in Denmark in a family of a vicar. It didn’t prevent her from having loose morals and lifestyle, which she showed in her paintings. In 1904 she married a landscape painter Einar Wegener. Eight years later the couple moved to Paris, where Gerda became very successful as a portrait painter and fashion illustrator for magazines such as Vogue. Gerda was always a truly free woman, having no boundaries between sexes and loving both men and women. Decadent and frivolous Paris made it possible for the couple to be engaged in playing with gender identity. Her husband was so successful in the guise of a woman named Lili that no one ever noticed it was a man. He later underwent the first in history gender-changing surgery.
