These are the incredible murals of Bonampak. They're among the finest and best-preserved Maya paintings in all of Mesoamerica. They teach us about Maya art, rituals, and especially Maya music. Located in the beautiful Southern Mexican jungle, Bonampak is in the current state of Chiapas. The Bonampak acropolis has 9 small temples. A building known as Structure 1 is where the 3 incredible murals are painted. The Maya murals have 270 figures on 1,615 square feet. Nearly 30 pigments were used. The word Bonampak is a contemporary Mayan word that means, "painted walls," and the Maya painted these master pieces in 791 AD, more than 1,230 years ago. This documentary lecture will fully explain the 360-degree mural in Room 1. Thanks to Mary Miller, Heather Hurst, and Leonard Ashby for their research and many of the amazing recreations seen here. Narrators: Professor Estrada and Teresa Escobar.
