The James Beard Foundation, America’s foremost organization in the promotion of culinary arts, has just announced the winners of its prestigious awards for 2022. Topping that list is the special award for Lifetime Achievements. This year that honor goes to master chef and PBS cooking show icon Martin Yan. For four-plus decades Chef Yan has delighted, educated and entertained millions around the world with his unique blend of homespun humor and culinary skills. His 3,500-plus episodes and 30 cookbooks had groomed multiple generations in dozens of countries, turning them into enthusiastic home cooks and lovers of Chinese and Asian cuisines. Layered in each show are gems of Chinese and Asian culture filmed in some of the most exotic locations in China and Southeast Asia. Multiple seasons of the Yan Can Cook Show had won James Beard Awards in the past for excellence in Food Journalism and Best TV Cooking Show. In 2001, Chef Yan was induced to the Foundation’s Who’s Who in Food and Beverage in America. “The James Beard Foundation has been my professional north star. Its guidance and recognition had meant so much to me,” said Chef Yan. “This latest award is a true validation of my career. It is, in the true sense of the phrase ‘an experience of a lifetime’. I am very grateful, deeply honored and truly blessed.” On June 13, 2022, Chef Yan joined all other award winners on stage at the Lyric Opera in Chicago.
