Surprise cellar found under Jamestown's churches

A cellar from the early James Fort period has been found under the brick church. The cellar was recently discovered by the Jamestown Rediscovery archaeological team after they removed backfill related to the reconstruction of the brick church in the early 20th century. The cellar is believed to have been associated with a building constructed around 1608 after the fort had been expanded to the east. The cellar would have been abandoned and filled in prior to the first church built on this location in 1617.
