Apetebi Ceremony -- Tying of the Braclet (1 of 3)

This is three part video of an apetebi ceremony that recently took place in Isara Remo, Nigeria on April 15, 2011. The apetebi ritual from Ijebu-Remo land is a ritual where a woman is married to a Babalawo's Ikin Ifa. For those in the diaspora that are reading this and observing the video, take note that the woman does not receive a hand of IFA as part of this ritual; and nor do she receive 1 or 2 ikins like the Afrocuban ceremony call Ikofafun or Ikofa. During this ritual, the woman has incisions placed on her left wrist with Ifa medicine placed on the incisions. Thereafter, a bracelet of IFA that is washed and prepared is tied on the left wrist with a gbekude seed. An ikin IFA, however, can be used a substitute for the gbekude seed as depicted in this video. The bracelet is a symbolizes that the woman is a wife of IFA or that she is married to a Babalawo's IFA. Take note, however, that during the ritual, the woman is not being married to the Babalawo, but instead to the Ikin IFA that belongs to the Babalawo. In my opinion, root of the Cuban Ikofa ceremony of giving a woman 1 or 2 ikin comes from this ritual but the incantations, songs, and the method of preparing the medicines and incisions was lost in Cuba; or the secret did not arrive in Cuba. Take note, this ritual is not to be confused with the ritual of 'itefa elegan' where a woman is initiated into Ifa. El ritual apetebi de la tierra Ijebu-Remo es una ceremonia de matrimonio en que la mujer se casa con el Ikin Ifa de el Babalawo.
