Ding Shande (“丁善德”) was a Chinese composer, pianist, and music teacher born in Kunshan, Jiangsu. He attended the Shanghai Conservatory of Music and studied under Huang Tzu, before becoming a faculty member himself and teaching at the Shanghai Conservatory in the late 1930s. From 1947 to 1949, he studied composition in the Paris Conservatoire with Noël Gallon, Tony Aubin, and Nadia Boulanger, and also attended some courses under Arthur Honegger. From 1949, he returned to teach at the Shanghai Conservatory again and later became vice-president of the conservatory. He passed away in 1995. The “Xinjiang Dances” are a pair of separate pieces originally composed for piano. The pieces take inspiration from regional folk dances in the Xinjiang province of Northwest China. The pieces are not influenced by the native Uyghur muqams. Rather, the scales are modeled on the pentatonicism characteristic of the Han Chinese. Ding's oeuvre includes the “Long March” Symphony, the symphonic suite “New China”, and the children's piano suite “Happy Festival”.
