The entire second cour has been building up to the Arima Kinen, where our two rivals, Oguri and Tamamo, face off in their final battle. The cumulation of our characters entire journey, through all the struggles they faced and hardships they overcome, comes down to this moment. It's safe to say that the race did NOT disappoint, which the team at Cygames pulling out all the punches with incredible animation, direction and music. Seeing Oguri and Tamamo's relationship blossom as they embrace on the track in the end is some of the most peak wholesome stuff I've seen all year. It's enough to make a grown man cry... The winning lives have always been a bit of an awkward point for the franchise I feel like - Cinderella Gray definitely tried to steer further away from the 'idol' aspects of the earlier 'Pretty Derby' seasons, instead adopting more sports / shounen anime like features. This works in its favour and helps create some extremely hype moments, while also appealing to a larger audience, without sacrificing the core of what made Uma Musume so strong in the first place - honouring the original horse's career with a story that can resonate with the audience. With all that said, we gotta have at least one concert to end off this incredible race, so we are presented with an Oguri Cap, Tamamo Cross and Dicta Striker version of NEXT FRONTIER, one of the very first songs from the game, even mimicking the stage and choreography from the game's concert. While we can always question the narrative purpose of these concerts, for me I can somehow forget everything when listening to a banger song. Another detail I can appreciate is how the characters are allowed to 'sweat' and 'look messy', as they work out hard for the concert, instead of being 'perfect' as idols are typically expected to. The last scene, as Oguri thanks everyone that helped her reach this moment, is a nice heartwarming sendoff before the epilogue in the final episode.
