1910 Stanley Steamer: A Ride To Remember

May 20, 2016. The 2016 Eastern Spring Meet was held in Vineland, New Jersey, famous for its grape farms and Welch's grape jelly. The car show venue was the New Jersey Motorsports Park, where participants enjoyed some laps on the speedway on the eve of the show. You'll here racing motorcycles in the background; it was their test and tune day. An old gentleman entered the speedway grounds late Friday morning, driving a 1910 Stanley Steamer. He completed a 60-mile journey to attend the meet, driving his Stanley the full distance. It was incidental that he had to stop to refill his water tank three times; it was a steamer, that's what you did on long trips (not many folks traveled long distances on roadways in 1910). I simply asked the gentleman if he would permit me to experience a ride in a steam car. He was delighted to share the fun he had all morning long. My friend and fellow Chrysler aficionado, Roger Ireland, joined us for a little ride around the event grounds. This AACA event would be my last until November 2020. A sudden illness prevented my participation in any antique car events. I recovered in 2019, but the world pandemic postponed AACA meets until November 2020.
