Phillip Sear plays a piece from an 1872 set of 20 'Sommerblumen' (Summer Flowers), by the prolific German composer Fritz Spindler (1817-1905). ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The German composer Fritz Spindler (1817-1905) initially intended to become a cleric, but turned to music and studied piano in Dessau, and subsequently settled in Dresden in 1841 where he worked as a teacher and composer. He wrote symphonies, chamber music and a piano concerto, as well as the salon music and educational sonatinas for which he is slightly remembered today. Spindler's pieces with opus numbers ran to the high 400s, and he was active to near the end of his long life. I'm sure that there are many gems awaiting rediscovery in his worklist, as some of his piano writing is quite imaginative. I'm not sure if the words of the Latin hymn would fit the tune, but it certainly seems to convey the same message as (say) the Bach-Gounod 'Ave Maria'.
