Once the fighting began at Fort Sumter, both the North and the South had distinct advantages in the Civil War. This means that neither side could claim a sure and swift victory over the other. The Union (North) leaned heavily on its robust industrial sector, greater population, and naval blockades that eventually split the Confederacy in half. The Confederacy (South) were able to fight a defensive war and relied on King Cotton to draw England and France to their aid, a plan that ultimately failed when Lincoln recast the war in terms of a fight against slavery in the Emancipation Proclamation. Ultimately the North won and the surrender occurred at the Appomattox Courthouse. If you have any questions, leave them below and Heimler shall answer forthwithly. This video is aligned with the AP U.S. History Curriculum and Exam Description for Unit 5 Topic 8, and all the key concepts thereunto appertaining.
