We hike the deepest rocky gorge in Central Europe. Breitachklamm Gorge in Oberstdorf at 490ft deep is an amazing site to see. You pay to park and there is a small entry fee to walk through the gorge but it is well worth it. If you are in Oberstdorf then this is a must do. The walking is fairly even and easy. It can get busy so we recommend getting there early to avoid the queues. After about 1.5km you will walk up some metal stairs, here you have the choice of heading back or continuing through the gorge. there are still more great things to see in Breitachklamm so we recommend continuing here up the gorge, after about 1km it levels out and you reach a point where you head up the side of the gorge. There is a nice place to get coffee and cake here (there are actually a few very nice places on the route) Just a bit on the history of Breitachklamm Gorge, it was inaccessible until the Tiefenbach pastor Johannes Schiebel had the idea of opening it up in 1901 to create new jobs in his community in order to improve the poor living conditions of the people. It was far from easy though, the so called Zwing, at 100m deep and 2m wide was a big challenge. In 1905 the gorge was finally opened to the public and now attracts 300,000 visitors per year.
