GRAMMY®-nominated: Justin Gray | IMMERSED | Best Immersive Audio Album (For Your Consideration – Final Voting) Exploring the immersive recording of the Bass Veena for the IMMERSED album. 🎧 Listen to IMMERSED/: https://justingray.lnk.to/immersed The Bass Veena is an instrument I invented, and was built by my dear friend, master luthier Les Godfrey. Bass Veena is a hybrid fretless bass inspired by Indian instruments. It features a 10-string harp, with four playing strings and two drone (chikari) strings tuned to the upper tonic. I use ‪@daddarioandco‬ strings on all my instruments. It is a hybrid electronic & acoustic in design, built to be amplified. There is a piezo pickup under the bridge (functioning like a contact mic), a separate piezo pickup on the harp, and a magnetic pickup. Each has its own output and no onboard summing or electronics. For this session, I connected my two main piezo outputs to a ‪@radialengineering‬ PZ-Pro, which allows me to EQ and level each signal before summing. From there, the signal went through my pedalboard (featuring mainly ‪@sourceaudioeffects‬ pedals). The last pedal is a Source Audio Ventris for stereo reverb. The stereo signal was recorded through two Radial JDI boxes. Additionally, I put the magnetic pickup into the Radial HDI. In the mix, we blended the stereo Ventris output into the Left and Right speakers and the dry pickup in the center channel. The most inspiring part of the session was capturing the instrument with immersive intent in the room. I fed two of my Markbass amps with the stereo signal. - ‪@DVMarkAmps‬ AC 101 2” ‪@MarkbassAmps‬ cab (NY 121) with Nano Mark head We mic’d the amps with a pair of Neumann U67s and captured the room using an 11-channel ‪@SchoepsMikrofone‬ 7.0.4 cardioid immersive array (the Gray Array). The result gave a sense of being in the room with the instrument, not just hearing a close or direct capture. For monitoring, I switched from my usual ‪@AudezeHQ‬ Euclid closed-backs to Audeze LCDi4 semi-open IEMs, which let me hear not just the direct sound, but also the amps, room, and transients in real-time — making it much easier to play dynamically and in tune.
