Can the Qur'an be Understood Without Hadiths? Do the Hadiths Explain the Qur'an? Prof. Dr. Zeki Bayraktar As you know the issue of hadith is a very serious issue of Muslims. Let's first describe what we understand when we say hadith. As it is known, the Holy Qur'an is the word of God from the beginning to the end, and God has revealed this word to Muhammad (pbuh), and Muhammad (pbuh) has communicated these to people with verses at firsthand. Therefore, the Qur'an from the beginning to the end is actually the real hadiths of Muhammad (pbuh) based on revelation. Perhaps we can refer to our other speeches, since we see the distinction between messenger and prophet is important. The Qur'an is the revelation of the Prophet Muhammad based on the revelations from beginning to end. When we say hadith, we mean the words that we perceive as classical hadith, other than the words, verbs or statements attributed to Muhammad (pbuh); not only that, even the words, verb and statements attributed to his companions even to successors, we call all of these hadith. The Holy Qur'an is the sum of hadiths for 23 years of prophethood life of Muhammad (pbuh) which were gradually conveyed to us from beginning to end. But don't get me wrong; this means the hadiths that are true kelamullah (God's words) based on revelation. With these hadiths, it is explained how he made the notification, how he struggled with the idolaters, the people of the book, the other groups. How did he migrate? What kind of difficulties did he face? What kind of judicial decisions did he take? Which case-laws were hit, which were wrong? Where has he been warned and where has not? Mecca period, Medina period, wars, family life, private life and as a result until the last moment of his death all communicated by the Holy Qur'an moment to moment. Therefore, I express this in many environments as follows; The Qur'an is the true hadith of the Prophet Muhammad based on revelation, the word of God, the Sunnah of the Messenger, and the Seerah of Prophet. It is therefore a book that contains all those. So, all this information is not enough for us, some things are missing, but there are some other words, rumors, so we can understand the Qur'an? When we say yes to this question, we are in serious contradictions; We would say that God has not been able to convey enough information to us even though He has sent us six thousand two hundred thirty-six verses / sentences while conveying through the life of prophethood and messengership to us for twenty-three years. Some of the information we need to reach has been hidden, concealed and referred to people we had said. Surah al-Ma'idah, 5/67. O Messenger, announce that which has been revealed to you from your Lord, and if you do not, then you have not conveyed His message. This statement and the cases in many other verses, we would say that the Messenger of God had not fully subjugated the revelation that God has sent down to him and did not communicate to us, and that these are very dangerous statements. We never have a chance to say that. The hadiths that we call classical hadiths are historical texts. They can be applied in their own context, they can be used. You cannot say that Hadiths are essential for understanding the Qur'an. In appropriate verses, perhaps different perspectives may be gained periodically for some hadiths, but if these issues are not taken into account, it can cause serious errors. Therefore, the Qur'an itself is a mubeen (clear, distinct) book by itself. There is no need for declaration and explanation of a mubeen book which declares previous books and previous revelations. The Qur'an itself is a book that explains. In this sense, we should not confuse the word tafsil (interpreting describes something in detail) with the word declaration, which is very important in the Qur'an. Another matter can be added to the subject, it can be elaborated. The Qur'an is a self-interpreting book in the Qur'an that God says we are interpreting. No further explanation is required. We can say; the most needed thing for the understanding of the Qur'an is that if we talk about something other than the Qur'an, it is the wisdom which is a verse of God. Thus God reveals His verses in verses. Another thing is kavni (related to creation) verses. God has verbal verses that is what we say for the verses of the Qur'an; there are also kavni verses, everything in the universe is such verses. Human, sky, atmosphere, nature, plant, animal, moon, sun, medical rules are all kavni verses. While we are trying to understand the Qur'an, we can consult to these verses, and we should... but each one is valuable in its own context. Other than that, a discourse would be a great deficiency for the Qur'an, which is unacceptable.
