This is a female leatherback turtle in Galibi Nature Reserve, Suriname. She had come out of the sea on a 400 PM high tide to nest. Our Oceanic Society research group was made up of students from Averett College, Surinamese Ecotourism graduate students, and two persons from the Riverbanks Zoo in South Carolina. The group is shown scanning the turtle for PIT tags (one was located) and recording her curved carapace length (169cm) and width (122cm) were so potentially a growth rate can be learned once compared to her size at last sighting. Most of the resighted leatherbacks at Galibi were tagged between 1999 - 2005. This year our team resighted 6 PIT tagged turtles out of about 16 total encountered. You can see a dog in the background, it is unfortunate that the she is there but the permanent field staff like to keep a dog to warn for snakes and other wildlife. Most of the times we were on the beach she (the dog) did not bother the nesting turtles, however we did watch one time as she ate a green turtle hatchling before we could get to it. An example of human/wildlife conflict on these precious nesting beaches.
